It's a new year and a new No. 1.

After knocking on the door and being in the top 10 an impressive 16 times, 7-Eleven Inc. has claimed the top spot of Entrepreneur's 29th Annual Franchise 500 for the very first time.

If you think you know the famed retailer because you hit 7-Eleven for your morning coffee and muffin or a Big Gulp after work, think again. There are new developments a-brewing at 7-Eleven Inc. that are pushing it into the stratosphere. Its store base has grown — specifically with a push toward having more franchisee-owned stores and fewer corporate-owned ones.

7-11 is owned by the Japanese. I know...... It seems like such an American icon doesn't it, but it hasn't been for many years.

The east indians own their share of 7-11's and another super large franchise brand which operates primarily in the southwest and west. Not sure of the name rat now....tip of tongue (feeble mind again)

The Japanese own the corporate franchise branding of 7-11 but are lately going to more private owner managed/leased stores than corporate operated. They own tons of valuable real-estate and don't want the liability of operating the stores. They skim their take off the top without the risks.

Oh, the 7-11 Slurpee...now that's as close to Heaven as it gets. Well, at least it was when I was pregnant. I was fortunate enough to live right across the street from one in San Diego and most late night cravings were for a Cherry Slurpee. I'm sure my ex didn't appreciate my waking him to go and fetch them but I did it anyway. Yeah, great stuff there...I miss 'em.

i think there was a 7/11 in hattiesburg at one time- at the corner of hutchinson and w. 4th-

also someone told me that the jr food mart on hardy by the zoo was once a 7/11

i know there used to be one on pass rd. in biloxi, but i think it's boarded up or rebranded
