After Donanelle's me and Pooker stopped at the Grand and checked out the new Stephen King movie, "The Mist".
Pretty good, special effects ok, looked a little low budget but a good movie.
I'll give you a little idea so you can make up your mind about going or not going to see it:
A strange mist rolls in and it has bad creatures in it.

Viewed "I Am Legend" at the Grand in Hattiesburg.
I read this book many many moons ago while in either high school or college.
I've been waiting all these years thinking somebody should make a movie from that book.
It was great. Will Smith who I would have never imagined being the star did a pretty good job.
The movie follows several things in the book, but like most movies it did not tell the whole story. But, if you have never read the book and even for me who has, it was great.
A lot of action, a lot of special effects but the movie only ran about 1.5 hours. If it had been one of those 2 - 2.5 - 3 hour movies I think it would have been something far superior.
I can tell you this, it was sold out for the first couple of days after opening and even last night the theatre was packed for each showing.
Give yourself maybe one of the later showings tonight or tomorrow and maybe some of the crowds will thin out some.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets
It's a good movie if you enjoyed the first one.
Something you will notice in this one versus the first movie is that there is not as many individual inferences to historical facts as the first movie.
This one centers around the President's Secret Book and not nearly as many real or imagined secrets and treasure hunt finds as the first movie.
It's good, don't get me wrong, but just not as information packed.

"P.S., I Love You!"
It is better to sleep in the doghouse for a week than to let your wife/girlfriend/mamma talk you into to going to this movie....I asked my wife to take my shoe laces and pocket knife from me about 15 minutes in.....
What an awful movie! I'm not a guy who hates all chick flicks....I liked "Steel Magnolias" and I own "Something to Talk About".....this movie sucked.....over hyped, melodramatic garbage....terrible story, terrible writing.....AWFUL....
BTW, my wife didn't even like it, and she watches a lot of really bad Lifetime movies....So, that should tell you how bad it was.....Shame....great cast.....Hillary Swank, Kathy Bates, Harry Connick, Jr., etc.....

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street / that new Johnny Depp movie / Grand 18 in Hattiesburg
It's a Tim Burton movie, dark scenes, vampire eye make up, things like that.
Man, they sing in this movie. Well, ok, but some of it kind of goes along with it and the movie stars don't sound like chickens cackling so it was ok, I guess.
Somebody done somebody wrong. Razors come out, old England. Sad closure ending, and an abrupt ending. But I have to say, it was late and I began dozing in and out but got about all of it.
If I had known going in what I know now would I have paid to see it? No.
But you may like it. Tim Burton likes those dark undertones, me too, kinda BeetleJuice like but not haha funny, mmmhmmm.

The new Cloverfield is reputed to be making some folks motion sick so I did an online search out to see what I could find. Check out the link and the following paragraph is part of the review.
Okay, now for the warnings: if you’ve seen the previews or know anything about this movie, you most probably know that it is based on the everyday person’s hand held video camera point of view just like in Blair Witch. If this really bothers you or you are prone to motion sickness, don’t bother with this movie. If you are the type of moviegoer that is bothered by not having enough detail or explanation, don’t bother with this movie. If you are bothered by or very sensitive to scenes that are visually reminiscent to 9/11, don’t bother with this movie. If sci-fi movies bother you, don’t bother with this movie. If none of these warnings affect you then you are in for an experience. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, this is not for the weak-hearted. I’m actually a little surprised that it’s PG-13. This movie is intense.

Went to see this movie at the Grand in Hattiesburg.
If you like high tech computer gadget movies with cop suspense and drama you should be picking up your tickets for this one right now.
Want to know who knows you on the internet, how fast and exactly how useless that firewall is when the FBI wants to know you? Go see this.
It seems there is a penchant in movies now for a taste of the torture scene group and this one has a tad of it too. Not as much as say a Hostel or Saw but more in the line of Seven (with Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt).
There are movies present that their only claim to fame is jumping out scare you scenes and those that live on blood and gore only.
This movie is more in terms of a psychological thriller, the real kind. It does however have some real life results of physical abuse. Somebody did a fine job of researching this part of the movie, you hospital folks will enjoy it for it's realism.
Diane Lane does not get nekkid but she does portray an analytical really well. She's also in great shape, note the veins in her forehead when she does the emotional scenes; most vascular.

Went to see "10,000 BC" last night.
The 10 o'clock showing was packed but I think this was mostly because The Grand 18 (or however many screens they have now) has closed down everyone else in town. Bagel.
Not a bad movie. The special effects were something else.
There were wooly Mammoths.
There were warriors post-Neanderthal.
There were warriors from the Land of Cush. (Google that.)
Suddenly there were Pyramids from some other something or other but they did NOT look Egyptian.
A lot of action.
Boiled down: it was a period piece centered around a blue-eyed girl (obviously very rare) and a post-cave boy who met when they were kids and fell in love.
The only person you may see in the movie that you recognize is that guy that played the wannabe jury foreman in one of the Grisham films, can't remember his name. I never liked that guy but he did what he could with this part.
Oh, there were also some Raptor like human eating birds in the movie; looked like Ostriches but acted like Raptors.
I don't know how many of you have ever really thrown a spear but a lot of these movies have taken spear chunking to a whole new level. I usta could knock you off your feet with a football at 50 yards but I don't think I could have chunked a spear as good as they show in some of these movies but it is very exciting to think about.
Is this worth your money?
Sure, if you wind up liking it as much as I did which is the only way you can know beforehand.
Would you like it IF you liked things like this?
You bet.
Hint: you need to go a little earlier to movies in Hattiesburg now since The Grand is the only show in town.
At least you get the seat you want even if it does get packed later.
You can wait until it comes out for sale but that ain't the way I roll. I want to see it when it comes out.

Vantage Point is a political espionage / terrorist type movie involving a plot to shoot the President of the United States while he is on a terrorist peace keeping visit summit meeting held in Spain.
Stars: Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Edgar Ramirez, Zoe Saldana.
Here's the deal: besides the overview already mentioned, this movie has a different approach to time frames.
Imagine an event you have watched in any other movie and later you find out the other scenes that took place while you had your view, or Vantage Point, and thought "ahhh, that's what happened".
This movie plays each vantage point restarting the movie over and over with the same time caption as each one begins.
It's almost like watching something in mental 6-D vision.
I liked it.

Ruins
Caught this last night in Laurel after dinner at Pasta's which is right across the parking lot from the Mall.
Pasta's: Excellent
Ruins: Kind of dumb. The trailers are the best part of this movie. Nothing really happens other than some freaky vine that covers an old Indian pyramid/temple does strange things to some kids who are (wow) on vacation from college.
I know there is not a lot of attractive movies out this week. If you are having a fit to watch something, stay home and watch reruns of Law & Order with a seafood platter or a carry-out from Pasta's.

The only similarities I saw was in the basic way-back-when setting.
Actually to me the pyramids were Cush design which sort of look like South American Indian design.
Origins of Egyptian pyramids looked similar to this being that they were flat on top.
The Cush people were what is now known as Africans. Their pyramids had more of a mud base which resulted in a desimation over the ages allowing few of them to still be in existence.

I did not really expect much from this movie. I was totally wrong.
It was great!
It's very hard for a new idea movie to come out, so many are remakes from previous movies or use the basic premise. This borrows the idea and then makes it's own way.
I most definetely plan to also look for a books-on-cd to go with this. When a movie is this good you can be assured that the unabridged book will knock your socks off.
I'm not going to tell any secrets, go see it yourself. I recommend it.

I took my bride to the Grand yesterday. We went to see Expelled, no intelligence allowed. It is a documentary about the Scientific community in Academia. Ben Stein did a great job of showing just how our children that we are sending off for higher education are being lectured to by concensus thought, and would not entertain asking the question of "Why" if it went against their Darwinism views. I would encourage all to see this film, but take your blood pressure medicine first. I knew it was bad on most college campus, but man, to what extent I was missing out on.

Last minute decision to break out of the woods and see some city lights tonight.
Went to the Grand and saw:
21
The only names you may recognize in it were Laurence Fishbourne and Kate Bosworth.
College students winning too much money at casinos.
Hi-tech for sure, I'm not a gambler, at least in that sense, so I learned more about the card game of 21 than I ever thought about.
When the movie was over I nearly took off for the Coast to bring a sack of money home with me but I have early morning Wednesday chores to get on and besides, I didn't have a big money sack with me.
This was a good movie, very good.
The time lapse photography/video thing is truly amazing.
Kate Bosworth in a little black dress is more than truly amazing.
Bottom line: Go see it.

Here is the showtime listing for our area.
http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes/showtimes?z=39119&nt=10&date=20080502
This movie runs for 2 hours and 6 minutes so they didn't skimp on it.
The special effects are really good and there of course is tons of action.
Sometimes the previews you see of movies are the best part of the movie but not so in this case.
The whole thing was good, there were no slow parts and a little hint:
when the movie is over and the credits start to run ... don't leave.
You are provided the short viewing of the sequel.
IMO: get your tickets, well worth seeing; especially if you grew up with Ironman comic books or really even if you weren't.

Prince Caspian
This is an AWESOME movie, with a great message! I'm a fan of CS Lewis, and his message in the Narnia series is presented so eloquently, and the writers did a wonderful job with the movie adaptation.
Rarely does a sequel movie, or a movie in a series equal or surpass the original, but this one does.
To some degree is it 'darker' than the first, and the fighting scenes are more frequent, and intense, but it follows along with the story, and isn't just 'put in' to beef up the movie. However, there are more humorous moments, and one liners as well.
It really is a MUST see for adults and children alike.
Anyone wanna go--I'd go see it again in a heart beat!

On a rating scale of 1-10, for me this was a 1.

If you are a fan of the show, you will not be disappointed.
The movie picks up 3 years after the series ends, and briefs you on where the characters are today. Then the story ensues. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll laugh, you'll cry, and get to see the lives of the characters unfold.
Without giving out any spoilers, you'll even get one of those unrealistic happy endings. ;)

Indiana Jones, that skull movie
I was surprised. I figured Ally McBeal had used up all Harrison Ford's money and he was gonna try to prop his bank account back up with a repeat movie but it was good!
You won't be disappointed, especially if you liked the other Indiana Jones movies.
Karen Allen was in it, looking a little rounder and often put up wet but looking good walking away in some high waisted Rocky britches. Been a long time since Animal House huh?

The Incredible Hulk
Starring: Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, and Tim Roth
I had strong reservations about this movie, seeing as it's been done before, but you won't even compare the two. The animation of the Hulk in this movie is much more in line with the comic book animation, than it's predecessor, and much better, in my opinion.
William Hurt does an excellent job in the role of the General in this film, and Tim Roth always does 'bad' so well. There is even a guest appearance by Lou Ferrigno.
There is some nudity, but it's limited to a shower shot with Banner having a flashback, and nothing is shown. No use of cuss words either, and plenty of action scenes.
There is a guest shot of another 'hero' at the end, but they don't make you want till after the credits to see him this time. It's a must see in my book.

*Wanted*
Starring Morgan Freeman, James McAvoy, and Angelina Jolie
This is a typical action packed special effects summer movie. The storyline is pretty interesting, and there's a twist to it. Morgan Freeman doesn't do anything bad, and he didn't disappoint in this movie. This was an interesting transition for James McAvoy as it was his first role as as an 'action hero', and he did a pretty decent job his first time out. Ladies you also get a nice yummy shot of him wet and shirtless. Anglina Jolie holds her own, as she's well acquainted with action roles, and not to leave the men out, you get a FULL backside shot of her.
There is lots of violence in this movie, the kind of cover your eyes with your hands at times, at least for me. More than I expected, but there is very little foul language.
If you like special effects, you'll enjoy this movie, and it definitely earns it's 'R' rating.
I'd grade it a 'B'.

* Went to see this movie last night at the Grand.
Pretty good movie.
It's one of those "there was a secret society started way back when to offset the evil in the world" type of things and like all movies like this it has some historical timelines, footage, and the addition of things that are fiction that go along with the movie storyline.
If blood makes you a little squeamish or you don't like your kids seeing it then you may want to skip this movie, there is plenty of that and violence plus as Katz said, Angelina Jolie walking away nekkid as a Jay-Bird (awesome).
Some very spectacular special effects of an acrobatic nature both person-wise and mechanical-wise.
If you take League of Extroadinary Gentlemen and add the firepower and blood of the Matrix along with some of the acrobatic effects you've pretty much got a good movie to me. This one made it.
I have no problems suggesting you invest to go see it.

Currently out on DVD:
Jumper
Starring Hayden Christensen Samuel L. Jackson. Diane Lane also had a bit part, which I didn't know when I began watching it.
It's the story of an individual that has teleporting capabilities, and a subplot of those that hunt those that are able to teleport. The plot was much more interesting that I thought it was going to be, while it certainly doesn't take a number one position, it held my attention, and it appears that room was left open for a sequel.
I'd grade it a solid 'B'.
Vantage Point
Starring Dennis Quaid, Matthew Fox, Forrest Whittaker, and William Hurt.
This is a complicated story line, with the character of Dennis Quaid at center, who portrays a seasoned secret service agent, that has returned after taking a bullet for the President. There are multiple sub-plots to this movie, and you are given the same sequence of events from several different view points. This one had me on the edge of my seat, because not everything is as it appears, which made it most intriguing, and this one will be one of those movies I'll watch over and over again, because you'll see something new every time.
I'd give this one a two thumbs up in a circle. ;)

Made a flying trip to town last night and decided to go see this movie at The Grand.
This was a good Batman movie. It seems that each one of them just gets better and better.
People kept telling me there was so much background information in this movie than others but I did not see that.
The characters from the movie and the actors that played them:
Go To:
Actors
Christian Bale Bruce Wayne/Batman
Heath Ledger Joker
Aaron Eckhart Harvey Dent/Two Face
Michael Caine Alfred Pennyworth
Maggie Gyllenhaal Rachel Dawes
Gary Oldman Lt. James Gordon
Morgan Freeman Lucius Fox
Eric Roberts Salvatore Maroni
Nestor Carbonell Mayor Robert Garcia
Cillian Murphy Scarecrow
Chin Han Lau
Nathan Gamble James Gordon, Jr.
Monique Curnen Ramirez
Anthony Michael Hall Reese
Melinda McGraw Barbara Gordon
Michael Jai White Gambol
Colin McFarlane Loeb
William Fichtner Bank Manager
Beatrice Rosen Natascha
Joshua Harto Reese
That Heath Ledger, God rest his soul, played a mighty good Joker. I had seen him in the other movie that I remember him for, A Knight's Tale, and he really did a good job in this presentation of Batman.
I would have thought the lines would have thinned out by now but they weren't. Better get there a little early, get your tickets and things from the concession stand and get in early to get the seat you want. Some folks showed up as the movie was starting and some a little afterwards. Those groups were stuck with finding "A" seat here and there and not sitting together.

http://www.thepointofnoreturn.us/images/smilies/naughty.gifYou are SO in trouble! :p
A lot of attention was given to the story line for this movie. There are a lot of intricate details that are going to take you more than once showing to see. There is violence, for us girls that means, cover your eyes, look away from the screen, violence. Big action scenes too, which are always a plus. The character of the Joker is very very dark in this version, and well played by Heath Ledger, but I'm still undecided as to whether or not it's Oscar worthy. Maggie Gyllenhaal did a great job stepping in to the role of Rachel, and I think she did a better job playing the character than Katie Holmes. Morgan Freeman never disappoints, and Michael Caine does a great job as well.

Penelope
Starring: Christina Ricci, James McAvoy, and Reese Witherspoon.
This falls in to the category of unrealistic ending romantic comedy. The story line is weak, but Penelope has a 'birth defect', which she born with due to a curse put on the family centuries ago. The story revolves around her journey to break the curse, and her mother's journey to break it as well. Usually the means to do so is predictable in movies such as this, but this had a pleasant surprise, and there in lies the moral to the story line as well.
I'd grade it a C.

Starring: Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, Terrance Howard, and Lena Olin
The story revolves around the main character's life. He's in his early twenties, and needs a heart transplant, and experiences anesthetical awareness. During this time he discovers some ugly truths about those he loves, and considers friends. There was quite an interesting turn in the movie that made this other wise predictable movie worth seeing.

The X-Files: I Want to Believe
Starring: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Amanda Peet, and Billy Connolly
Ya'll know I've been waiting for this one, and as an X-phile, I wasn't disappointed. This movie focused much more on the relationship between Mulder and Scully, which by the way, he's still hot, and she's more beautiful now than when the series was on. Anyone that is a true fan of the show knows that Mulder always wanted and needed to believe, and Scully always doubted anything that she couldn't prove by science. We get a look as to how their relationship has progressed through the last ten years, which is dredged up when the FBI ask Mulder to help on a case. The plot has a lot of 'Frankenstein' tones to it, but it's not in the manner of which one would reach expect when they hear 'Frankenstein', but this one had no signs of viruses in it. The plot is engaging, but not engrossing, but I enjoyed it all the same.
I'd grade it a B.

The Great Debaters
Sarring: Denzel Washington, Forest Whitaker, Jermaine Williams, J. D. Evermore, John Heard
I believe this is Denzel Washington's directoral debut as well.
This moved was inspired by real events. It's the story of Professor Melvin Tolson, and the group of students he molded at a small TX college. Professor Melvin Tolson, was known at the time radical political views, as well as his strong teaching methods during his time. This is the story of how these students became a well known debate team, that went on to defeat Harvard.
Because this is a story based on actual events makes this movie worth watching, even if the screen play itself lacked a certain 'umf'. One of the final scenes of the debate with Harvard will give you goose bumps, and makes the move worth watching.
I'd grade it a 'B'.

I knew this was going to be an interesting movie when a bomb went off in the first scene, and I jumped 3 feet. This is the kind of movie that you have to pay attention to because you aren't certain if the lead character, Don Cheadle, is a good guy or a bad guy. It's the story of a man who has peaked the interest of the FBI Special Task Force, and lead agent, Guy Pearce's character, due to his alleged involvement in a terrorist organization that the FBI is tracking.

I saw Appaloosa today. Oh my. It was good.A western. Directed by Ed Harris.
When two gunmen, Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch, arrive in Appaloosa they find a small, dusty and lawless town suffering at the hands of renegade rancher Randall Bragg. Bragg has not only taken supplies, horses, and women for his own, but also has left the city marshal and a deputy for dead. In Bragg they find an unusually wily adversary who raises the stakes by playing with emotions. It is now up to Cole and Hitch to stand against the actions of the renegade rancher, which have already taken their toll on the town.

Body of Lies
Starring: Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio
Directed by Ridley Scott
As a fan of Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott (think Gladiator), I could not pass this up. This one is for all those who are fans espionage themed movies. Lenardo DiCaprio plays a CIA agent in the middle east trying to capture a high ranking Muslim terrorist, with Russell Crowe playing his not so honest boss. There is violence, so be ready to cover your eyes, cussing, and minor nudity, but it's an edge of your seat movie that will not disappoint.
Grade: A+
The Express
Starring: Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown
This movie is based on the life of Ernie Davis. The first African American to win the Heisman Trophy. It's a very inspirational story as his plight to winning the award was marred by the hostile nature of the time period when the fight for civil rights was beginning. While the story is good, and one all children should see, I don't recommend it for children or young teens, simply because the 'gd' word is used quite often, and about the only 'cuss' word that is used. Have your hankie ready is it does have a Brian's Song theme towards the end.
Grade: B (because of the use of the 'gd' word)

Quantum of Solace: the latest James Bond movie.
Went to see it last night at the Grand in Hattiesburg.
If you liked any of these movies you are going to really like this one.
Seems like the deal this time is to keep James Bond in more fight and chase scenes, he doesn't spend as much time at high level parties or love scenes or use all the high tech gadgets as in past movies.
The new "supposed to be the hottest ever" Bond girl is ok. That is as far as I will stretch that. The red head in the London Fog rain coat blows her off the map.
The movie will indicate a lot of loyalty between Daniel Craig (James Bond) to "6" (Judy Dench) who is James' boss lady.
I liked that part. It will show people that may not have experienced that part of the human element in today's world what a person can relate to as for loyalty to someone and to what degree they will walk the walk. Action walks, bs talks.
Also if you have ever spent anytime in a real face off or instructing others how it really works, the fight scenes here just as the ones in the "Bourne" line lay out what it is really like and can give you a good visual that the "lay back and give a few well thought out body shots" in a fight is not applicable for much other than movies and Saturday night bar fights (and can really get you hurt).
The human body and mind can be fine tuned to an exact utilized machine and this movie, as the Bourne movies, gives you a good glimpse of this.
I may have to go see this one again.

Saw it at The Grand in Hattiesburg tonight.
Not too crowded, I guess all the Thanksgiving folks were still knocked out from the binge consumption of all the carbohydrates.
I like Vampire movies.
This was a Vampire movie but a little different. These walked in the light, showed no fangs and one special twist was that they had diamonds all over their skin if they got in the sunlight.
Boy Vampire meets Girl Human.
He's 17 + 100 years, she is 17 and that's it.
The lead feller was a pretty good actor for the movie, that girl has some skills that will grow. There were a lot of new faces in this movie so that is to be expected and enjoyed.
Vampires, some of them, like to play baseball in the sunshine. No kidding.
Should you go see it? I liked it. Will it win some kind of award? Prolly not, but it wasn't stupid or cheesy, so I was ok with it all.

Starring: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Amy Adams.
Excellent movie, with intense acting. The year is 1964, and the setting is a parochial school, where at the heart of it, there is a forward thinking priest (PSH), and an old school nun (MS) who serves as the principal of the school. There are events that take place involving the priest, the nun has suspicions, and sets out to try to prove her case without any proof. The ending is powerful, and lends credence to the name of the movie itself.
If you are a true fan of the art of acting, and those who are highly skilled in that art, then this is a must see movie.
