LEXINGTON, Ky. (BP)--Listening to Jerry Clower will make you a better sermon-listener. Of course, many of you about now are asking yourself, "Who is Jerry Clower?"

If you grew up and lived in the Deep South in the 1970s through the 1990s you know all about Clower. A comedian, Clower was born and raised in South Mississippi and looked every bit the part -- heavy-set, thick gray hair, huge smile and deep southern drawl. His down-home humor and comedic routines about southern culture were downright hysterical. He was the clean comedian of my parent's generation, and I never heard of an audience he did not have rolling in the aisles with laughter.

But what made him so funny and effective as a comedian was not his material. You or I could have taken his material and received blank stares. What made him so effective was his ability to tell a story. Some might say that Jerry Clower was a one in a million talent, but the truth is he was about a one in a dozen among his generation in the South. There were Jerry Clowers all over South Mississippi. They did not perform on stages with vast audiences; they simply told stories on the front porch steps to listening family members and friends. Storytelling was a part of the fabric of the culture and it took place wherever two or three were gathered......

Boy does that bring back memories. Thanks for posting that QM. My uncle loved Jerry Clower...I remember listening to him when I was a kid. And that article is 100% right. The same uncle could tell you all kinds of stories. I could sit and listen to him all day. He was liked by everyone..never knew of anyone that disliked him. Him and his stories sure are missed by alot of people.

I had the good fortune to see Jerry Clower speak as the keynote speaker of the Hattiesburg Public School District's Parent University event. He was wonderful.

Way before Jerry Clower made it big in the humor department:D:D...Mr. Jerry & my dad used to be competitors in the fertilizer business. They would see each other at different conventions and meetings and such.

I will try to tell this like dad used to tell it....some of it I remember and some it I don't.

They (Jerry & dad) was sharing a room at a convention when

Mr. Jerry: "Guess what?"
Dad: what.
Mr. Jerry: I just made a record.
Dad was thinking a sales record, since they did sell fertilizer.
Dad: so what.
Mr. Jerry: "No a record!"
Dad: like a 45 (old days). HA!! HA!! HA!!
Mr. Jerry: "yes!"
Dad: How much you want for it?
Mr. Jerry: I don't know...about $5.00.
Dad reached in his pocket, pulled out a $5.00 bill and gave it to Jerry.
Mr. Jerry looked at the $5.00 bill (back & front)
Dad: what's wrong with my $5.00?
Mr. Jerry: Nothing..I just don't know where to get the record printed.

(Printed is not the word I'm looking for, but I can't think.)

Mr. Jerry & dad both started laughing.

To finish the story dad ended up helping Mr. Jerry get the records & they were at some fertilizer meeting when dad had the floor.

Dad basically told everyone that they had to buy one on Mr. Jerry's records before being allowed to leave the meeting. This is how Mr. Jerry Clower got to be a house hold name. But you know he never let it go to his head..he was always a down-to-earth person.:thumbsup:

And that is the story of how my dad got Mr. Jerry's very 1st record (album)and of corse Mr. Jerry autographed it for dad. And to think when all this started dad & Mr. Jerry used to be rivals in the fertilizer buisness. Who would have thought it.

Yep...my dad & Mr. Jerry went back a long time. Dad has told me that I got to meet Mr. Jerry, but I was to young to remember it.
