I see you are a hog hunter! I had a conversation the other morning about escaped domestic hogs....I was told that in as little as two weeks after a domestic hog is released, escaped it will revert to it's wild ways...like start growin' the longer hair and tusks and looses it's tameness. Have you ever heard this?

January 29th, 2008, 10:29 AM
So does that mean that one is a tame hog since it has no tusks?

fb i have heard that also i know it dont take long most of the hogs if not all around here have some domestic mixed in with them
pooker i have a dog at the vets office that will tell you that hog has tusks they were about 2" just hard to see from the pic

It's got em pook, they just may be small.........Nice Hog, you going to cook it? I have a friend in Texas, he just eliminates them off his land, but says they ain't worth eating......I told him since he trapped them too, the needed to corn feed them for about a month then slaughter them.

that one was caught in a training pen and he was put in a pen to heal up given some meds and will be turned loose back into the main pen, but we do eat some, boars are not fit to eat most of the time we catch them and cut them and turn them back loose or take them to a training pen, now a sow is a different story they are pretty good it they are not to big

My brother that's visiting from Texas was muzzle loader hunting on a lease in the area of the ( bean fields ) west of 49 at Brooklyn Fotno...he saw 4 walk out into the plot. He says he didn't take one because he wanted a deer...but the lease owner asked him to take out the next one he saw. There's supposed to be as many as 20 living in the area.....

When I was in Corpus Christi the Havolinas were pretty cool to watch. But they aren't really pigs.

the bulldog had to hold him longer than i like we usually try to get them tied as quick as possible but this feller bayed up and got caught in a big tree top and we had a time getting him out, not to mention he was not really pleased about the whole thing
if you have never been hog hunting then you really need to go there is nothing else like it

Do yall ever live trap any TH?
taterhead
January 30th, 2008, 08:37 AM
we have but i prefer to take them with dogs and catch and tie them, lots more fun besides if someone has a place that they want the hogs gone then a trap is not as effective cause once a hog sees a trap go off and dosent get caught or gets out they will never get near one again and usually big hogs wont get in one anyways

Make's since...a friend of mine had two small hogs given to him that had been trapped...they were mean though...when you'd walk up to the pen the little male would charge and ram the side of the pen...they looked a little different from the pic you posted...these were solid reddish brown...very long snouts...

i have seen a lot of different colors whats funny is they each are different, i have seen a 100lb sow that would try to get you every time she got a chance and a 450lb boar that you can walk up to and pet the boar in the pic put up a good fight and actually cut 3 dogs (only 1 required any staples) but the sow in the pic below just gave up and when the dogs found her and we didnt even have to send in a bulldog to catch her

From reading the link, this stood out! [quote]
The hunter's wisdom when boar hunting is to, in a confrontation, "pick your tree" so you will not take that extra millisecond to decide which one to climb

i use catahoula curs and pits
yes it is best to decide what your going to do if things go bad, there is nothing like a 200 lb hog trying to go between your legs

I've got some friends that hog hunt with Pitbulls. They've been over to our place a few times. They got one last year that was about 250 lbs but they ran one that would go about 500 lbs + (by their estimates).
It's something else to watch those dogs, both the trackers and the hunters. When they let go with those Pitbulls and the hog started squeeling, it'd stand the hair up on your neck. I'd hate for one those Pitbulls to latch on me.......wooooo weeeee.

I know what you mean when they go in to catch they only have 1 thing on their minds and that is to catch, i know a guy that caught a pretty good hog, had him thrown and they pulled the pit off and tied him to a tree, the hog ended up standing up on them and the pit got off the lead and in all of the comotion caught the hunter on the rear end we still laugh about that he said the dog didnt lock down it was like he knew he messed up as soon as he bit
most people are scared of pits and dont want to be around them but if you find a good line of dogs that havent been inbred then they are as good as their owners
if i had to depend on my pits to keep people from taking my stuff i would be in trouble they suck as watch dogs

I was up in Wisconsin' 2 bear seasons ago and we had a bunch of hunters there for South Carolina. One of our employees was drunk and started braggin' about how bad ass his pit bull was and that it could catch a bear. The guy from South Carolina then showed him 2 dead pit bulls in another guys truck....omg....they were torn to pieces...literally shredded. he stated that that is what happens to a dumb dog. He also had a cur that had to have some stiches because it got a little close. he told him to bring his catch dog next year if he wanted him kilt. He said they special trained their dogs to NOT try to catch the bear...lol..

almost every time i tell someone that i hunt hogs and they have a pet pit they always want to know if their dog would catch and i always tell them that we start our dogs on smaller hogs and use them to build them up to catching in the wild....i guess they dont realize that we arent picking flowers and there is a real chance that the dog wont make it......i spend as much on trying to protect and keep up with the dogs as i do on some of the dogs, cut vest and tracking equipment is high

February 4th, 2008, 11:11 AM
yeah that trackin' equipment is definetly expensive. I don't know about the vests and what not.

a cut vest for a bulldog is usually about $100 and $25 for a collar...a vest for a bay dog (its usually dosent have as many layers) is about 65-70 and the cut collar is about the same
i usually vest all of my dogs if it isnt to hot, i always vest the bulldog cause he takes the most abuse
alot of those texas boys like a big bulldog i like one about 50-65 lb, the hog we caught last week was held by a 50lb bulldog, the hog weighed about 175

Someone told me that they used to use Boston Terries to kill hogs...you ever heard of that?
taterhead
February 4th, 2008, 12:58 PM
i have never heard of it but who knows, i know some people that use jag terriers, they weigh about 17-25lb and are born with out fear, most are usually all catch just dont have the weight to hold

there is nothing to leging a hog, just wait for the bulldog to catch then go grab him
