Saweet! :bouncy: It's incredible for Hattiesburg to be hosting a DCI event.
I just may have to go! Okay with Blue Devils and Phantom present I KNOW I'm going to have to go!
Several years ago I was a judges runner at a DCI event in Jackson.
Thanks so much for the post CJ, I wouldn't have known about the event otherwise!http://www.thepointofnoreturn.us/images/smilies/dance3.gif

My oldest daughter needs to check that out........She's played drums since 7th grad and is on the Drum Line at her school and is thinking of dropping it for Theater. Trying to talk some sense into her........Do me a favor and PM me the scholarship opportunity and housing allowances they make for Pride members so I have some ammunition in the logical conversations I'm trying to engage in.

You're going to have a logical conversation with your daughter? ;)

Being in the Pride will give her some of the best memories, and friends she'll ever had. I almost didn't participate in the Pride myself. I'd decided I'd just do concert bands, but after my freshman year, I stuck with the Pride, and dropped concert season.
Band is so much more fun that theater! :D

Aww... It makes me sad that you dropped concert season - that's really where you learn the most. I'm a music ed. major, so I'm kinda biased.
Glad you had fun in The Pride though. It's beginning to become what it once was in the early to mid-90s - before budget cuts and the Thames Administration.

I LOVE music, but I was passed up in the talent dept. ;) My days were spent with all the music ed students, back in the day (LOL), it was a group of talented people.
Now if you can get back to the Harkins years, pre Moser(I fully admit to not being a fan of his, I was there his first two years), then you'll be doing good.
The Pride has a lot to offer, and I'm even more excited that Mohamad Schuman is there. We were in the Pride together, and he's going to be a great asset to the program, and he'll understand the Harkins days comment. Those were some good times.

Basscatter, let me know if you want some info on the Pride; I used to march with them. I was also a theatre minor.

I think I have. They don't send me stuff. I marched in the alumni band a couple of years ago at homecoming (and gave them my contact info), but no one's ever contacted me for anything else.

I did Alumni band for several years. Was part of organizing Homecoming weekend, etc. for years too. I'll go register now.

Due to the lack of interest, we've done away with alumni band; but are trying to get it back, and we think 2010 is a great year to start. We're starting early at contacting people, so that by 2010 we hope to have a good number of people.
I recently re-designed the site, during which I had to delete all member info. So, if you registered before last month, please register again HERE (http://www.usm.edu/band/index.php/member/login)

The lack of interest was in part attributed to how the administration, former director, who did not care for our presence at all. Just an FYI, tis all.
I too got the login page.

Cool. Thanks for that. USM alumni, but not in the band. I have an ancillary interest in that my daughter will be a Dixie Darling this year as an incoming freshman.

I j ust got back from watching Phantom Regiment rehearse, later on, I'll be heading out to Oak Grove to watch the BLue Devils reherse, they are staying on OGHS. Picked up my ticket too.
I'll be there tonight--it's a band geek kind of day! :D

Tickets are actually extremely cheap compared to other events where you will pay up to $60 per ticket.
I hope many of you will be able to make it out tonight! Remember, Phantom is doing a master class at 2:30 - free to ticket holders for the evening performances.
I'm headed back out to get things ready.

My daughter is sooo excited about this! She's been at band camp all week and I think the whole drumline and pit are all going together! She is in the indoor percussion group after marching season and she'd give up all other activites and sports for indoor!

I would love to see it back next year, and even bigger, but can we PLEASE have a separate section for high school bands.....ugh the group from Harrison Central was TERRIBLE, to the point their principle will be getting a letter from me.

What'd they do?
What kind of crowd was there?
katzeyez
July 23rd, 2008, 12:44 AM
The section that I was in was packed. I was on the 18th row, right where the stairs cut off, and if you were in the rows behind me, then you needed to go down and around to the other set of stairs to get up to your seats. Needless to say they just wanted to crawl over me, so much so to the point that I put my foot down, and told over a dozen kids to go down, and around, some more than once.
Their drum major was constantly making derogatory remarks about corps members that were over weight, and and constant remarks about 'Asian' and stating that the entire corps, the Mandarins, were 'Asian' in a OMG kind of voice. Then he got on his cell phone, which we were asked to turn off before the competition even began. Another member made the statement 'stand up if you're a fag', and when one of the chaperones went to step over me, and I said, 'Please don't, I've had enough people crawling all over me, he response was 'f'ing excuse me.'
A very delightful, and respectful bunch.
I learned tonight that I REALLY can no longer handle large crowds, and people in my personal space.:aarggggghhhh:

The daughter had a great time!!! The band she wanted to win didn't but came close!!
Sorry you had to deal with that katz! Some kids just don't know how to act and some directors I guess don't care......I know when the daughter and their band went to an indoor competion in Ohio this year....that was one of the main things the directors harped on was.....behaving!

Thanks SMT! I appreciate the email address, and will be using it. Thing is, that row behind be had THREE chaperones sitting there, and I'm not certain if one was the band director, but I know they heard me on more than one occasion telling their students to go down, and around to the other stairs.
Oh--did I mention I got called the 'crazy' lady. LOL I thought, McDuh, everyone knows that already.

PK, I'm glad your daughter had a good time, and I'm glad their director tries to instill a modicum of courtesy and respect in them. These kids had NONE.

We had a total of about 22 people in the band.
A few of them were feetball players.
