I can't believe this...

Animal Control took the dog to the Humane Society, where she will be quarantined for 10 days. After that, because the incident occurred in the neighbors' yard and the dog was chained, the owners can come and get her. No charges will be filed against the owners.

The dog needs to be put down. And I'd own everything the neigbor has, and will ever earn.

Along with dog ownership comes responsibility...not just with pit bulls. Parenting also comes with responsibility. Would I keep a pit bull that wandered up in my front yard chained there....??? Never. Would I let my child get anywhere near that dog? Never again. I understand that sometimes kids get away from us, but we really need to keep our eye on them when they're around dogs, especially big ones...even if they are the family pet that you have always trusted.

Some dogs are very territorial.
If you do a little research on the dog breeds you can find which ones might give you concern when it comes to them being around people other than those they see in everyday family life.
That is one of the reasons people pick Pitt Bulldogs and other breeds as well for home protection.
These type dogs are not for your normal yard dogs.
I've had them all my life and never had much problem out of them but just like people meeting people, sometimes a dog is just not going to like someone and that can be triggered at any moment.
Since you are supposed to be responsible for everything in your domain including pets and guns and all other things, if people were held more accountable then that would change a lot of what goes on in this life.

More stupid remarks about pit bulls...my jack russels will tear you up. You should see them pick on Layla (my pit bull)... Check the stats...pit bulls are strong. I won't deny that. Layla is a very strong dog. But as long as we give into ignorant ideas, like banning pit bulls, it'll only be a matter of time - so when will the rots, dobermans, chows, and german shephards be banned? They're on the "black" list of dogs too...geez...fail comments!!! That pit bull should NOT be put down...I'm glad they decided against it...the dog did not run free attacking people. The child was in the dog's yard, the dog was CHAINED...

Though, I didn't get my pit bull as a "guard" dog...she's my pet.

If my dog bites somebody it better be because they were fixing to harm my wife or kids.
That's the only time I will let it slide.

Yeah, we should let all pit bulls who kill 3 year olds off the hook.
The kids parents should be caned.....anyways we won't ever know the whole story.

Public canings is not a bad idea.
I mean, a lot of people are walking around with their pants pulled down already so they are pretty much ready at any moment.
I saw something last night that was new to me, a female, dark skinned girl, standing at the check out of a convenience store with her pants unbuttoned and unzipped all the way down to her personality. Is that the new deal?

When my son was six, we were attending a New Year's Eve party at the home of a co-worker. My son and their son were back in the bedroom with the dog, a German Shepherd. Never got clear on what happened, but the dog jumped up and got my son by the lower lip, slicing it completely through down to his chin on one side. (It was gruesome.) After a quick trip to our small-town ER, we were driven to Memphis -- middle of the night, sleet, New Year's Eve -- to meet a plastic surgeon. His daddy met us there, and had to be escorted out of the room it made him so ill. I'll never forget sitting on a stool at the foot of the gurney (I had to help hold him down) with my dress soaked in blood, while this handsome, elegant man in tuxedo under his surgical gown sewed my son up and the whole time kept saying -- "Be sure they kill the dog. Promise me, promise me when you get back that the dog will be killed. Kill the dog, whatever you do. Swear that you will kill the dog."
They didn't kill the dog, but they had to pay a big rider on their homeowner's insurance to keep him.
And I'm happy to say that my son got over his fear of dogs, his scars faded (the surgeon was incredible) and I still love dogs too.
So, I don't what the right thing to do would be. We never went back to their house, though.

A biting dog is like a bad bull or an alligator that has lost it's fear of humans (like in the other recent Slidell story).
The right answer is if the animal does it once it will do it again. We aren't dealing with humans, we are dealing with animals with one hair width away from primal.
It's not a humane thing, it's a logic thing.

I owned a Pit Bull once...It lived 8 years...and for that 8 years...no parents would let their children visit my daughter and I don't blame them. As far as a pet...it was to us...My daughter could waddle up and sit on him and he'd just...get up...let her fall off...and walk away....but...during that time....I had to rescue 2 people from him...once I dove from the top step at our door as he lunged... and my hand just HAPPENED to slip into his collar. I wrestled with him on the ground as he tried to back out of his collar. Hummingbird slung open the door and rushed our visitors inside. Another time...Hummingbird yelled that he was going to attack a neighbor that was walking through the field to my house. When I swung the door open he was trotting in a circle around this man...growling....the man had out his knife standing in one spot turning to face him as he circled. I was able to cut him off and grab him. One time I received a call that he was a couple of houses down (I had a fence around the yard but he learned how to get at a corner and climb out)...and that he was chasing a neighbors milk cow (at that time...livestock could be tagged and let roam free in our area). When I drove over and got out...he had the cow by the tail...sliding behind it trying to stop it. All I could see was that cow's full bag bulging between her legs as she ran. Brutus pulled the hairs out of her tail and stopped to gag and spit them out and she ran around a house. I saw him stop and watch. I couldn't believe it....but he ran to cut her off...catch her as she came around the other side of the house. At this point....calling him off wasn't an option...I had to catch him. I took off running as hard as I could in the area I thought they might meet. It worked. The cow was running right to me and he was cutting across...I tried to grab him as he struck but missed....he did too....he dove and snapped at her neck as she ran past and missed. That hard loud snap when he missed made me try harder. I finally got my hands on him because he fell in behind her again and I was running right beside him. He Killed several dogs...one with gaping lung puncture wounds. I have actually crawled under someone's house....grabbed him by the hind leg...and drug him and another dog out....while he was latched onto it's neck. Bull dogs don't just bite....like some Sheppard...Doberman...or the other dogs yall mentioned....they latch and lock. I've had to twist his jaws open to release his grip on an already unconscious dog. Thing is....to us....Me....Hummingbird and my daughter....he was a pet...and never ever did anything to make us think he was upset with us...never....so...a pet you say?....to you yes....to strangers...no....and when that female has a litter...even yall better be on your toes. I released Brutus on a big huge armadillo once....he charged over and picked it up by the shell...then it fell from his mouth....I thought it slipped out of his mouth. I walked over and there was a huge section of shell and backbone missing from the middle of it's back and he was gagging trying to spit out shell and bone. Those dogs are dangerous and if you have one....you'd better have him on your mind all the time. Where he is...what he's doin....who's comin over....where to put him for people to visit. It's a real responsibility to own one.

Whoa, RT. That was scary.
I saw a program not long ago about dogs -- all dog behaviors are derived from wolf behaviors, just different behaviors emphasized in some breeds. That circling and cutting-off tactic sounds just like a wolf, doesn't it!

I wanted to add to my story too, that for years when people asked my son about his scar, he would say "I tried to kiss a German Shepherd on the lips." His attitude helped me a lot.

No BP...it's a good topic...one that we could learn from. Little dogs that run up and grab you by the pants leg are a cry different from dogs that can kill you. We need input from people who have experience with dogs that can kill so that we can be more prepared.

Those of us with scars from dog bites, I have one that runs from the middle of my hand up to almost mid forearm, have to get creative with our stories just because we get asked so often. ;)
