Former Miss. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Gandy died Sunday evening at her home following a lengthy illness. She was 87.

"There will be no services until after Christmas," said her law partner, Carroll Ingram of Hattiesburg, who served in the state legislature while Gandy was lieutenant governor, from 1976-80.

Gandy was the first woman elected to statewide office and the first to serve as lieutenant governor.

"Lt. Gov. Gandy's death is a major loss to Mississippi," said Wayne Dowdy, chairman of the Mississippi Democratic Party. "She left behind a legacy of major achievements throughout her tenure in the Mississippi Legislature, as state treasurer, as insurance commissioner and as lieutenant governor."

"After she left public office, she didn't leave public service," Ingram said. "She was a great lady, just a tremendous person for the state."

Gandy's sister, Frances Gandy, died July 26.

Ingram said there will probably be a state funeral or memorial service for Gandy in Jackson, followed by a service and burial in Hattiesburg.

Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.

Miss Gandy was a member of the law firm that brought my husband back from D.C. to practice law in Hattieburg. We enjoyed knowing her. She and her sister were so sweet to each other.
