The year was 2003.
Mrs. Doc, the heathens, and I were members of First Baptist Church Atlanta and attended the Lord's Candlelight Supper service before Christmas.
Dr. Stanley had been out of the pullpit for several months following complications from surgery.
We sang our songs and then the Worship Center went black to start the lighting of the first candle. When the lit candle was raised, the face of Dr. Stanley glowed in the candlelight.
He could barely speak, but in 10 short minutes by the light of one candle, he delivered the entire Gospel. Then he lit candles in the front row and as one candle after another was lit, soon the entire room was illuminated by the glow of thousands of candles.
It was one of the most moving church experiences of my life.
Merry Christmas.
