Ok, for just enough information not to overload my brain, what is the skinny info on the TV's that are now on the market?
LCD? Plasma? Picture Quality?

Great thread...I have a 1987 non digital TV that will have to be replaced before Feb...and since it's in the family room, I'd like a skinny one that will fit on the wall l like a painting, large enough to be seen comfortably across the room...so please...give Guru all the info you can! *grin*

We have a 42" Sony LCD. Be careful that you don't overdo the size. For the space we have ours set up in we could have gone smaller and been just fine. But I do love it.

I heard lcd was better, I am not to knowedgable on the subject. But especially if you are a gamer and you leave your game on I have heard bad things about plasma burning the image into the screen. Plus lcd seems to be cheaper.

If I remember correctly SMTV told me LCD was better than Plasma. Can't remember exactly what he said but he should be in here in a minute, or as soon as he sees this.

We bought a LCD that is 'digital ready' for our travel trailer. It seems to do well. It's a small, as we don't have much room in the camper. But, I can pick up 3 digital channels from WLOX on the coast with it, crystal clear, using the antennae on the camper. One is a 24hr weather channel, and the other 2 or regular broadcast stuff. I haven't tried to get WDAM yet.

Unless he's out taking pictures for the "Guess 10 game 3"......

Has anyone bought a 48" or 60" LCD? This would be the flat thin screen wall mount. Do they have speakers in them? Are the speakers any good? Can I also hook up exterior speakers to it? Are there plug ins for this already? Do you have to be sitting right directly in front of them for viewing or can you still view things just the same if you are sitting at an angle, slight angle? Are there plenty of plug ins for VCRs and things of that nature? How does the picture compare to a standard type TV set?

How far from it will you be when watching TV? That sounds big.

I've got a 46" LCD with the speakers built in. You're welcome to come by and take a listen.

I will try to take you up on that as soon as I get home SMTV. Maybe we can check it out after Donanelle's.
Nana, I guess I'll be about maybe 12-15' from it. If I get one I'm going to mount it way up on the wall about the height of the Toshiba that I already have. The bottom will be about 50" or more off the floor.

Shoot -- I was sure I had the oldest TV. 1991, Magnavox, still has a great picture.

It's a whole different world than your GrandParent's 13" General Electric black and white with the round channel knobs that only picked up 3, 7 and 12 on VHF and sometimes 13 on UHF.

It was 3, 5 and 13 and then later 10 (Educational) which sort of came and went. Memphis. I'd give anything to be sitting on the floor in front of that TV with my grandparents, watching Lawrence Welk. Some of those old Lawrence Welk re-runs really get to me.
Or maybe the Friday night late movie at our house, when Mama made popcorn. Sissy always had to get her pj's on before the movie though, because she never made it past the first break. She made an elaborate pallet in front of the TV and then ZONK -- she was gone. We'd watch John Wayne or whoever, and my dad would get riled at the mistakes "No, no, no, you never address an officer as YOU . . ." "They didn't have repeating rifles then, for heaven's sake, who writes these things . . . "
(cough, cough, sorry, that sounds a little . . . familiar)

I would love to have a mast large enough to pick up New Orleans, Jackson, and Mobile.

* When I am home on Saturday evening, no matter what else is going on, the TV will be turned to MPB channel 14 at least long enough to see a minute or so of Lawrence Welk as a rememberance of times past.

* With the set up I have I watch Jackson just like you watch Hattiesburg. I can also catch Mobile fairly decent sometimes but seldom turn a knob to it anymore. At different times I can catch New Orleans, sometimes like Channel 7 but those times are getting fewer and fewer, most of the time now it's not good.
A triangular mast is what I wouldn't mind putting in one day but with the loss of TV service and signal folks that are still in business I see that as long gone. I'm just waiting until one way when the digital craze may allow new technology that can pull these stations in.
Also, Birmingham comes in fairly often, some better than others.

1) Which Sony did you get?
2) What do you intend to watch on it?
3) What are your other A/V components that you currently own?

I got the W4100 I think. It's the new W model. I couldn't afford the XBR.
I've got an Xbox360 I'll play on it and I've got the home theatre system, along with Directv dvr box. I'll be getting the HD dvr box in a couple of weeks.
I watch a ton of sports. I ususally will hit the movies (dvd) too. I'm a fan of Discovery channel and the like.

The W series is amazing; I have the 46W3000 and love it.
An HDMI cable will be included in the DirecTV HD DVR box, so that's covered. You will one another one for the X-box, if there is an HDMI out. I would suggest hooking up a small antenna to the HD DVR box in order to pick up WDAM-DT's signal. The DVR will decode and record digital OTA signals. Also, apply for ABC and FOX digital waivers. This is different from analog waivers, and both WXXV and WLOX may approve them.

I've already got the local channels and Fox East and West. I dropped ABC but will probably pick it up again now. What kind of antenna will I need to get the DAM signal? Is there a specific kind? Thanks for the help! I'm just not too HD savy.

I bought a $50 Radio Shack antenna. It's white and rectangular, and is designed for indoor or outdoor use. About three-quarters of a shoebox in size.

What about Samsung?

Samsung is good. I chose Sony based on my experience with Samsung and the approx. 1000s of reviews I read. I read several articles about Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, and Sharp tvs. The Bravia engine is top of the line based on what I read. I've gone through 3 different Samsung home theatre systems and my father in law has gone through 2, so avoid their home theatre systems at all costs but their tvs are considered to be very good.
