The Mississippi Board of Education raised standards this morning when the board approved making it more difficult for students to earn the “advanced” and “proficient” designations on state tests.

When students take state tests, they are rated in one of four categories: advanced, proficient, basic or minimal.
In 2007, 90 percent of Mississippi’s fourth-graders were rated as either advanced or proficient in reading, based on their state test results. This year, 45 percent of them will be rated as advanced or proficient in reading.
