The Mississippi Board of Education raised standards this morning when the board approved making it more difficult for students to earn the “advanced” and “proficient” designations on state tests.

When students take state tests, they are rated in one of four categories: advanced, proficient, basic or minimal.

In 2007, 90 percent of Mississippi’s fourth-graders were rated as either advanced or proficient in reading, based on their state test results. This year, 45 percent of them will be rated as advanced or proficient in reading.

Oh--I agree completely. Heaven forbid if we actually set expectations and boundaries for children today.

The problem also lies in expecting a standardized test to tell us what kind of student a child is, their capabilities or their potential. Lots of children are extremely intelligent, but perform poorly on standardized tests. While I won't classify myself as 'highly intelligent', I will say that I am one of those kids that a standardized test is not a good gauge of what I am or am not capable of doing.
