Well, there is more software and it is easier to find for Windows. There is less for the others, though they tend to be more stable and less susceptible to most virus's and hackers on the net today. I will say, though, that there are virus's for Mac's and linux, and there are hackers who know how to manipulate them both.

If I bought an iMac can I burn home movies to DVDs, I make myself? Also data to DVDs? Reall important...I am at my wits end with buying CD's and DVD burners and CD's and DVD that wont work for one reason or another. All day I have tried burning a "data DVD" that only has pictures on it. I have thrown out 5 DVD's....I don't know if the DVDs are bad or not...1 burnt out of 6. I hate hate backing up!

That's really weird, but may not be related to Fotno installing linux. That brand new Sony HD flatscreen tv that we just bought has a tiny(barely able to see) line that extends from the left side to the middle of the screen at about the vertical midpoint of viewing area. That really sucks. I never saw it until Hawkeye pointed it out and now that's the first thing I see. Something going on with Sony:confused:

That set should still be in warranty, Nana.

It is and will be going to the shop soon. Hawkeye done got all that checked out. By the way, the installation guys were from Bruister's (?sp) but I think we got a new one right off the block. When he installed the HD system he plugged the phone line into the ethernet line which caused our phone to short out. He told us to call the phone company, the phone company told us to call Directv and tell them our receiver had a bad modem. They sent us the new HD receiver and Hawkeye plugged everything in just as the dumba$$ did and it did the same thing. I was looking on the back of the new receiver for a number that the lady at Directv wanted and just happened to notice it was plugged in to the wrong port. Works just fine now. Nothing wrong with the first receiver. Ain't that some SH!T.:D

ummm it could have been a wrong dll for the graphics card that caused that to appear...or it could have been just a fluke that happened and the screen went bad and had nothing to do with Linux.

Why didn't you just take Linux out, by reformatting and reinstall windows? That should have fixed the screen thingy. Anyways bad drivers are fixable by getting the correct driver.

Why did you ship it back?

I've installed Ubuntu on all kinds of computers.I've never had a problem with Ubuntu not recognizing a graphics card, whether it was Nvidia,ATI,Radeon,or integrated. Ubuntu couldn't recognize the card in carperson's laptop.I couldn't even get to a GUI to start the installation,so,I didn't even try to install.

However, I do want one that has enough of everything...NOT just a little...like the PC's you buy off the shelfs...I always get mine built b/c of that!

A tip. Check out the refurbished macs on the website. You'll have to search for the links, but I got this Mac Book Pro for 42% off because it was a refurb and had a small dent. The warranty is full and the performance is great.

I did get Hawk's at Burton's. He hasn't had any problems with it and loves it.
Apple does have some good stuff online and usually has a neat little extra. At the time I purchased his Mac they were offering it at the same price but it also came it an Ipod. I just wanted it that day for his birthday.:D

I don't need a monitor I just got a Samsung flat screen. Also what about my printer hummm I need to think some more.

Nana
December 27th, 2007, 11:28 AM
Hawk has a HP printer, nothing real fancy but it was no problem- plug and play. Iphoto has some really neat features that work better than I have seen in most photo programs. You can always sell the other monitor. IMac is an all in one, takes very little room. If all my programs that I use in my business were compatible I'd have a Mac too.

but its a hassle

Goobersmooch
December 27th, 2007, 12:23 PM
also if your kids are in school or something you can get the education discount...usually doesnt amount to much...especially if youre looking into the lower end stuff...like 20 bucks for a mac mini, 50 or 100 bucks for an imac

but sometimes theres a decent deal floating about

Way ahead of you pooker.
They all ready support every platform out there.
Remember what you said about servers.
Our Server isn't a dual-processor,but they offered dual-processors.All of them have CentOS preinstalled.CentOS is a derivative of Red Hat Linux.
I think if we ever have to up-grade We might go for the Dual Xeon server they offer.
I'm running a Derivative of Ubuntu on a Centrino Duo Lap-top right now.
