Tyson 3rd-period net off 92% on 3.5% higher sales

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Tyson Foods Inc., the Springdale, Ark., meat producer, reported fiscal third-quarter net income fell 92% on 3.5% higher sales. For the quarter ended June 28, Tyson earned $9 million, or 3 cents a share, against $111 million, or 31 cents, in the year-earlier period. The company reported a loss from continuing operations of 1 cent a share against earnings of 32 cents a year earlier. Sales reached $6.85 billion from $6.62 billion. A survey of analysts by FactSet Research produced consensus estimates of profit of 12 cents on sales of $7.01 billion for the quarter. The chicken segment posted a $44 million operating loss as grain costs jumped, Tyson said.
