Waste Management reaffirms pursuit of Republic Services deal

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Waste Management Inc. on Monday reaffirmed its intent to acquire Republic Services , which spurned its $34-a-share cash-only bid on July 18. Earlier Monday, Republic Services said it adopted a so-called poison pill, which is generally designed to protect a company from hostile takeovers. In response, Waste Management said in a statement: "The actions by Republic Services' board announced today do not change our focus on acquiring Republic."
