HANCOCK COUNTY --An 84-year-old man, who repeatedly held off an alleged intruder Sunday when the man tried to break into his home, finally got a gun in desperation and shot through a door, wounding the intruder in the leg.

This may be so wrong to say, but I think if a few more criminals were shot then maybe some of this would stop.

If you read the entire article, he shot him as a last resort. Growing tired from holding the door, he shot through the lower panel of the door, hence the leg shot.

If more criminals knew a gun was waiting on them, it would be a deterrent. The castle doctrine has gone a long way in this regard. It still requires a gun, loaded, close at hand, and the knowledge and ability to use it.
