This post is to get a running list.....I will have:

2 canoes for me and my party
2 tents for me and my party
1 BassRoom (portable potty consealed behind a tent for the ladies)
2 coleman camp stoves for 3 burners
1 icechest slap full o beer and whatever the bride wants to drink
1 bag o charcoal as the campfire starter
1 portable grill good for about 4 strip steaks
Steaks for my group of 4 possibly 6.
Several Flashlights

Who has a lantern with a stand for it??????

I'll have:

tents
ice chest
two burner coleman stove
food & drinks
lanterns & flash lights (all battery)
bug juice & sun screen

We'll probably rent the canoes from Black Creek outfitters. We're planning a trip earlier in the season too. If the family likes it enough, we may go ahead and invest some money in canoes, but we'll see....

Depends on the alcohol factor. At some point, it gets harder to coordinate that paddling! That is when you find a suitable sand bar and make camp.

That and more frequent the pit stops, eventually it gets too hard to get back in da boat....

Academysports.com is where I shop for Canoes. The Old Towne is 449 and the Pelican Colorado is 329. I already have a Colorado. Now I'll have an Old Towne too......They are a little more sturdy. But if you don't have a canoe, don't sweat it, I think rental for an overnight trip is like 50 bucks at Black Creek Canoe Rental.

Gus,

Your question about Canoe Prices earlier.....Here is a link to the Old Town 14.7 Guide that they sale at Academy on the Coast or in Slidell. Gander Mountain also carries this Canoe, and they match prices so if you print this item, they'll match the price for a 100 dollar savings.

http://www.academy.com/index.php?page=content&target=products/outdoors/marine/kayaks&start=0&selectedSKU=0142-02118-0147

BassCatter

Fish-Bait........you might be able to save a dollar or two......I just got back from Gander Mtn. and they have a Pelican Square Back Canoe for $699. It's made by Pelican, the same maker as one of mine, and wouldn't handle the size outboard you're looking for, but would handle what you'd need for a float trip.

I sure hope that I am home and can go with you guys! My list would include:

canoe or kayak
fishing pole
minnow sien
bucket
saw for firewood

I grew up camping out on the creek banks and Daddy never had us a tent... We slept out under the stars next to the camp fire...

dude...does it have built in oar locks?...if it does you can definitley keep up if you have ever had 4 minutes of instruction on rowin.......seriously....I used to row agaist an incomin' tide....in the spring it was pretty hard....I got washed out a couple hundred yards a time or two, but I learnt how to beat that.....

rollinthunder
January 25th, 2008, 08:31 PM
yeah it has oar locks...I learned to row in a dingy...We'd sail to ship and use it to get to the beach....till I got smart and started usin the trollin mtr lol...that's how I usually use the john boat in the creek...it looks stupid but I float with it backwards...strearn first down the creek...it's easier for me to control it with a paddle that way...I sit in the bow seat...trollin mtr. on the side...real easy to control....beats sit'n in the back try'n to paddle...too wide back there......looks funny see'n a boat goin down the creek backwards though...lol

But if you try it FishBait, You can haul a lot of gear in it......Just get yerself a hernia trying to get it up the bank at the landing......gotta look at weight buddy!

rollinthunder
February 20th, 2008, 01:49 AM
I dunno what's up with my PC but I couldn't get the pic of the boat but I can imagine. That incline at Moody's is pretty steep and sandy as heck...We'll hafta team up to get the boat's up. My 14ft john boat's gonna be fun. I haven't floated since Katrina so I don't know about the new hazards but added structure for bass is up my alley. I know in the heat of summer when it's dry...it can get pretty low and I've had to pull my boat a little but I don't see problems with canoe's. I usually take my fly rod and when I find a shallow flat that I can wade I stop and take a while. I finally learned how to roll the line under the overhang but haven't had much success with bass. Mostly Brem...Goggle Eye and Redbellies. I'm talking like this is a fishing trip instead of a fun floating/camping trip but I can't be on the creek without fishing lol....can't do it lol...

Fish-Bait
February 20th, 2008, 09:30 AM
That drift boat is too big...they make em' alot smaller. like 10 ft. as for the haul up the hill......who has a winch. we will tie everything together and pull em' all up at the same time while drinkin' a beer.

BassCatter
February 20th, 2008, 10:39 AM
I'll have a stick in the boat too Rollinthunder.......That's all part of it.......If we team up we can get whatever Fish-Bait brings to float in......He keeps looking at heavy stuff......we had enough trouble with that 12 jon!

OMG...hahahaha.....I just visualized a barge float'n down the creek with people pole'n on each side lol...Hey...I did a search on that canoe you bought from Gander Mountain....I like the description but from the pic it's hard to tell if you can pack what you need for an overnighter. Are you confident you can haul what you need? I really liked it but wanted some feedback about that...

Guru
February 23rd, 2008, 11:20 AM
An eventual barge is the way all our raft trips around Meridian used to go, lol. On those the last raft in won. Might be 6 different rafts or things that looked like rafts all tied together.
My bro-in-law and me fabricated a 16' one time out of culverts, oh yeah it worked. About 8' wide and 16' long. We salvaged a lot of girl teams with that raft and had more room than you can imagine. We even built a covered porch on the back half of it.
Of course that won't work on this trip but I bet we will have enough horsepower to get anybodies boat up on the sand bar.
I'm still thinking of that wide gheenoe but have not made the trip to look at them yet. I want to sit in one and see about the rowing width that RT mentioned, that would be a deciding factor in terms of something I could use long term.

BassCatter
February 23rd, 2008, 12:21 PM
RT looked at the canoe yesterday and his doubts about gear storage were eliminated.

rollinthunder
February 23rd, 2008, 05:22 PM
I guess I'm old country but the last 40 years I've floated that creek it's been in a john boat except for two times. I use a trolling mtr but only to mtr. back upstream to retreive hung up lures. I can't leave a 6 or 8 dollar lure hanging in a bush.

We did have a really good time when we did canoe though...I have a story or two to tell about those adventures lol....My boat is a heavy and wide but I've learned to navigate floating with it. I float it stearn first down stream...that way I'm sitting in the bow seat looking astearn...the width at the bow is narrow enough to use paddles effectively. My wife doesn't have to paddle and only has to use her paddle to push off of an occasional snag.

I've had to drag it across shallow gravel bars though but when we get out it's easy. When we make our float though everybody will be in and out of the water...it'll be a float...swim....fish trip and I can't wait...the fishermen need to be in within the front 5 boats though...I've found that the bass spook after several canoes come by....not saying that the last canoe might not catch the creek record...( a friend of mine caught a 6 pound large mouth on this float )...but fishing isn't everything we're going for here...it's a small part of enjoying nature. I could just drift and listen.

The camping....OMG....we'll have a big time...Black Creek has sand bars and an occasional gravel bar....no hard sand stone to rip your feet apart lol...during that time of year the water will feel sooooo cool and refreshing...no wonder when I go through Brooklyn I can't keep up with the car tags from different states in the canoe rental's parking lot.

I'm in love with this creek and the wilderness area surrounding it...I'm so happy someone had the foresight to protect it.........I'm soooo lucky....it's allll in my back yard..........

Well, I built me a raft and she’s ready for floatin’
Ol’ mississippi, she’s callin’ my name
Catfish are jumpin’
That paddle wheel thumpin’
Black water keeps rollin’ on past just the same

Old black water, keep on rollin’

Old black water, keep on rollin’

Yeah, keep on shinin’ your light
Gonna make everything, pretty mama
Gonna make everything all right
And I ain’t got no worries
’cause I ain’t in no hurry at all

Well, if it rains, I don’t care
Don’t make no difference to me
Just take that street car thats goin’ up town
Yeah, I’d like to hear some funky dixieland
And dance a honky tonk
And I’ll be buyin’ ev’rybody drinks all ’roun’

Old black water, keep on rollin’
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shinin’ on me
Old black water, keep on rollin’
Mississippi moon, won’t you keep on shinin’ on me
Old black water, keep on rollin’

Yeah, keep on shinin’ your light
Gonna make everything, pretty mama
Gonna make everything all right
And I ain’t got no worries
’cause I ain’t in no hurry at all

I’d like to hear some funky dixieland
Pretty mama come and take me by the hand
By the hand, take me by the hand pretty mama
Come and dance with your daddy all night long
I want to honky tonk, honky tonk, honky tonk

The Beatles

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she's gone.

O.K. everybody. My bride, of infinite wisdom, informed me that when I picked a weekend in June for the Float Trip, it was Father's Day Weekend. What this means, is she didn't realize the date of the trip, and scheduled my Father in Law to come over McComb and my father to be at the house to honor them and me. For the folks that were planning to go.......Can we push the trip to June the 21st launch at 11:00 and pull out on the 22nd??????

That was the other tribe......those who camp up the hill. They also tend to leave their icechest in the rising creek.

I think they went into the orb and ascended into space. That, or they went mud ridin'.

They had a fire dying down when we went through to get firewood, had one guy passed out in a tent and one Jeep trying to pull a Ford out of a mudhole.......bpitt didn't miss the easy shot at the Ford owner either, and we were unarmed and didn't have a clue who they were.......

BC didn't mention that pic of the ORB in the background of that wonderful picture of the camp fire with the sparks shooting up. A picture is worth a 1000 words...but you'd have had to been there for the full effects of that scene!
