JACKSON – A former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers director has been indicted on federal embezzlement charges for allegedly stealing more than $70,000 from the government.
Donald Smith, the former director of the Graduate Studies Institute of the Corps’ Engineer Research and Development Center at the Waterways Station in Vicksburg, appeared in federal court Tuesday for an initial appearance.
U.S. Attorney Dunn Lampton says Smith is accused of using various government credit cards to purchase more than $56,000 in items for his personal use. Smith is also accused of collecting near $15,000 by allegedly submitting fraudulent travel claims.
If convicted, Smith faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
