TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — Officials with the Tupelo Automobile Museum began looking for a special car when Toyota executives asked during recent tours where was one of their cars.
The Toyopet was the company’s first vehicle imported to the U.S. in 1957. Only 287 were sold.
Then, a Toyopet showed up — on eBay. And it was a Toyopet Crown Deluxe, one of only four known to still exist.
The museum acquired the car this past week for $22,322.
The engine and transmission are being restored. A few dents and scratches must be repaired.
Museum officials are working with Toyota on a special display for the Toyopet as well as the Prius, which will be built at the company’s plant near Blue Springs beginning in late 2010
