OCEAN SPRINGS -- The Commission on Marine Resource's decision to change limits on speckled trout left several Ocean Springs fishermen scratching their heads.
"It's confusing," said Kevin McCarty. "It's confusing for everybody."
In its Dec. 18 meeting, the commission changed the minimum length for speckled trout, which are also known as spotted sea trout, from 14 inches to 13 inches for fishermen in Harrison and Hancock counties.
In Jackson County, the length was kept at 14 inches.

Why?

The fish will never get any size to them if everybody keeps all the little ones.

Tell me about it fotno_. With the redfish they made a slot and a 1 fish over. If they wanted to make a change for the sake of making a change then they should have a slot and then "so many over this length"....This new law can't be enforced. There is just no way it can without totally bogging up the court system. I think it's crazy....

You have a 12 inch limit
Fish-Bait
December 27th, 2007, 06:15 PM
This is what gets me.....dammit, we are Missippi'......crap!
The most controversial portion of the new limits are the boundaries between Jackson and Harrison counties, since the new limits place a small sliver of western Jackson County in 13-inch waters. The boundary is channel marker No. 9, which is located near the Biloxi Bay Bridge, going north.
The boundary means that fishermen in parts of Biloxi Bay are limited to 14-inch or larger speckled trout. In other parts of Biloxi Bay, anglers can catch speckled trout that have a minimum length of 13 inches.

I think it should be a slot.....say 10 fish over 14 inches and less than 20 and two over 20.
That's alot more simple and the redfish rebound has already proved it works.

December 27th, 2007, 06:23 PM
I was wrong, you'd have a 14 inch limit then.............Biloxi, Gulfport, Bay St. Louis a 13 inch fish is leagal.......Go to the Rigolets landing and 12" is cool.

Well that sucks hind tit. Of course, you can always catch the 12" and do the 'stomp' method if you see the enforcement coming.

This should have been left up to the biologist not a commision. The more I think about it the more upset I get. This past year was by far the best fishing year for trout for me and alot of others. Now they go and mess with the rule just for the sake of messing with the rules...jeez...The reason being in my opinion is crybabies not bein' able to catch a 14 inch trout....good grief.

That commision should have Biologists in it huh?????
Fish-Bait
January 2nd, 2008, 03:23 PM
apparently not. At the bottom of the article it states that the biologist recommended the rules to stay the same, but the commision changed it.

That's just it Hawk. I don't think the BMR guys will enforce it. It's almost impossible to do and be fair. Change for the sake of change.

I'm telling ya, the 'stomp' method. Catch the 12", if you see the warden coming, drop the fish on the deck and stomp his ass till he's 14" long, they'll stretch!

PASCAGOULA -- The Commission on Marine Resources is expected to hear a petition Tuesday to reconsider its December decision to reduce the speckled trout minimum length from 14 inches to 13 inches in waters off Harrison and Hancock counties.
They are challenging the ruling....hahahahahah!!!!!!
Mr. Hinkel says..."It's one of the dumbest decisions I have ever heard of," he said, noting that state biologists recommended keeping the limit at 14 inches.
More here....lol.. (http://www.gulflive.com/news/mississippipress/news.ssf?/base/news/1200309319264240.xml)

Now that I can live with, although I don't agree with the length being lowered. In four years we will all be catchin' 12 inch trout and well,,,,,,HELLO LOUISIANer!:wavey:
This vote will make a 13-inch minimum limit for all three Coastal counties, including Jackson. The original ruling was just for Hancock and Harrison counties.
The new limit goes into effect Feb. 16.

So, the scientic data comes out.....Speckled trout don't spawn until they are at least 13 inches....this takes out a year class of spawning....the first year class.....good grief.
The article is at the bottom of the page...to see the whole thing you have to go to the home page under local news.

The CCA has filed suit against the Commision the suit claims it ignored the experts (which it did, it totally went against the biologist's recommendations)
Link to doc on the CCA website (http://www.ccamississippi.org/CCA%20Sues%20CMR%20to%20Protect%20Speckled%20Trout %20Fishery.doc). (this link will open up a Word.doc page)
You will either have to save it or open it to view the document.
