Eight signees from Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora’s first recruiting class haven’t received clearance yet to play football this fall by the NCAA Eligibility Center.
Fedora said last week that five of the 30 players he signed won’t meet eligibility requirements, which would work out well for the first-year coach because USM can offer only 25 scholarships. He wouldn’t give the names of the five that won’t qualify.
One signee, former South Panola star defensive back Bud Barksdale, will be attending Northwest Community College this fall.
Four of Fedora’s signees, Josh Tillman, Bo Tillman, Bruce Wilbourn and Quinn Sanford, attended Mississippi Elite Christian Academy this summer in an attempt to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. None of them have received clearance yet to play this fall.
A pair of former community college players, tight end Leroy Banks and defensive back Andre Watson, are both waiting on clearance after taking summer courses.
Defensive lineman Willie Packer, a native of Moss Point, and Nick Chartrain from Desire Street Academy in Baton Rouge are also both waiting on clearance. Packer did take part in voluntary workouts on the USM campus this summer.
Fedora got some good news today when a former Coahoma Community College teammate of Banks, defensive end Terrance Conner, reported to campus after receiving approval from the NCAA Eligibility Center.
“The NCAA doesn’t like to give timetables (on player approvals),” said Jason Gray, USM senior associate athletics director. “They try their best to accommodate schedules like they take into account if your first game is on Aug. 30 or Sept. 6.”
