JACKSON – Dr. Steven Hayne, who has performed autopsies in suspicious death cases for a decade and in some cases triggered controversy, is no longer on Mississippi’s list of designated pathologists.
The state Department of Public Safety informed Hayne of the decision in a letter faxed to his office.
Former Jackson Mayor Dale Danks, Hayne’s attorney, says the letter did not explain the reason for the removal, an action Danks called “totally unjustified.” The attorney says the matter will likely end up in litigation.
Public Safety Commissioner Steve Simpson has scheduled a news conference and is expected address the situation, including how counties are going to fill the void left by Hayne’s departure.
