The effective date of Mississippi Senate Bill 2006, which has caused waves in the scrap metal industry since being signed into law by Gov. Haley Barbour, will now be delayed.
According to a report by the Associated Press, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate has temporarily delayed the Aug. 11 effective date of the law aimed at curbing copper theft.
“Wingate’s offer on Thursday was in response to a request for an injunction from Metal Management Mississippi Inc.,” said the AP report. “He said he expects to release a decision on Tuesday. His stay of the law is effective until Wednesday.”
The decision comes after many local scrap metal businesses across the state raised concerned over portions of the law.
“This is going to be a logistical nightmare for this business,” said John Brown, owner of Brown Brothers Scrap Metal Inc. in Cleveland.
According to the law, which tightens regulations on metal sales, dealers will be required to register their business with the Secretary of State’s office.
