Special election set Sept. 23 for Guice's seat
Tuesday, August 12, 2008

A special election to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Rep. Daniel "Danny" Guice Jr. of Ocean Springs is scheduled Sept. 23.

Gov. Haley Barbour announced the special election Monday.

Guice served in the Legislature since 1984 before he was appointed by Barbour to fill a vacant four-year term on the Mississippi Parole Board. Under Mississippi law, Guice was not allowed to concurrently serve as a member of the House of Representatives and the State Parole Board, according to a news release from the governor's office.

"I appreciate Danny's distinguished years of service in the Legislature and look forward to his contributions as a member of the Parole Board," Barbour said.

The special election will be held in House District 114, which includes Harrison and Jackson counties. If a runoff is necessary, it will be held Oct. 14.
