Mike Espy and Haley are both from Yazoo City and are friends or friendly......but, I don't think he'll get it.....I think Wicker, Pickering, or Charlie Ross are the top three candidates other than Haley himself...

Pickering or Wicker, favoring Pickering.
Charlie Ross is running for the 4th Congressional District seat in the fall.

Pickering has removed his name from consideration for the Senate vacancy. (http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071228/NEWS01/71228022)
Drat. So much for my bet in the vBookie for this topic.

I continue to say that Keith Starrett would be a tremendous pick...but it won't happen.
I wonder if Tuck would give up that new MSU job.

I should have gone with my instincts on this one.
A person with direct knowledge of the announcement has informed the Clarion-Ledger (http://www.clarionledger.com) that Roger Wicker will be appointed to the Senate seat.

It's official - Wicker has been named to replace Lott's vacancy.

On a Washington Post blog, the following entry was made regarding the Wicker announcement -
There is a poll out showing former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove defeating Wicker, 48% to 34%. This must be a factor of name id. Is it at all likely that former AG Mike Moore will change his mind and jump in, like Shaheen and Tom Udall? How likely is it that AG Hood will beat Gov. Barbour in court? There's still an outside chance the dems will take the seat.

GULFPORT --Exactly what played into Gov. Haley Barbour’s choice of U.S. Rep. Roger Wicker to fill Sen. Trent Lott’s shoes as interim senator – thus likely ensuring Wicker will get elected to the seat permanently come November?
Only Barbour will ever know for sure, but the pols’ and pundits’ story lines have firmed up to some main themes that sound pretty plausible.
For starters, many believe tension between Barbour and Lott likely came into play. That tension has been noticeable for quite some time, evidenced by some digs Lott has made about Barbour about the Katrina homeowner grant program Barbour’s office is running and other issues. Lott’s resignation itself, appearing to catch many by surprise (perhaps even Barbour) and putting the state Republican Party in a bit of a pickle, would likely have been timed differently if there were total peace and harmony among the state’s top two Republicans. Come November, the GOP will now have to defend two House seats while running a Senate campaign. Surely this could have been avoided with some teamwork.
Interesting article in the Sun Herald.

Interesting article in the Sun Herald.
I like this part of the article:
The North Mississippi lawmaker is just not that well known from Jackson southward. If Democrats were to run someone strong in the southern half of the state, such as U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor –- well, things could get really dicey for Wicker.
I think Gene Taylor would clean Wicker's clock.

Did anybody other than me actually get pissed off when Trent announced he was 'retiring'? I mean, we kept that dude in office forever, reelected him to do a job, and then he ditches, just to go to D.C. to get rich lobbying for crap that'll probably do us more harm than good. What a freakin' joke. He did do some good stuff for us over the years, and now he just up and leaves. Am I the only one disgruntled?
