All new cars will have some degree of hybridization by 2020, by which point battery technology will be ubiquitous and vehicles will communicate with one another and the road to make driving safer and easier.

I read somewhere once about a road test they were conducting with cars that used computer assisted driving. The cars were able to maintain 70 mph and travel with less than 6 inches between their bumpers.

Seems like you could gain some mpg's that way just from drafting.
