I don't like it much either. I don't think there's any way my brother and his wife will ride out another one, and they'll take Mom with them. I've already started talking to her about making a list of what she wants to take ("my pictures") when we try to get three households and two cats into two cars.

Here's a thought -- I may get some of those "space bags" and put all my good clothes in them. Even if they get wet, stuff will be ok, and will take up a lot less room.

Gustav (name), a male given name of Old Swedish origin (meaning "staff of the gods")

I ain't hittin' the panic button, yet. However, it would be wise to review the 'hurricane preparedness/list' thread and maybe be picking up a few things at, like, the Dollar Tree. You don't wanna spend the money if'n you don't have too, yet. I'll be picking up a few 'cheap' necessaities, such as batteries. I've got a crapload of flashlights, just need some batt's. Some cheap canned goods would be wise to probably get between today and say, Thursday. Cuz ya know by the weekend it's gonna be 'on like a chicken bone' at the grocery stores, etc, if that thing even remotely looks like it's coming here.

BE PREPARED, but do it responsibly.

Water almost gone, Vienna sausage low. Plenty of everything else, but very, very busy.

I bought space bags and a whole slew of other stuff, mostly not food except snack items. Don't have a good track record with stockpiling snacks. stock trading this morning on the refining sector support the above statement. Refiner stox are going through the roof this morning in early trading. I bought Tesero yesterday as a hedge. Other sector up on Gustav is infrastructure re-builders.

It might be true. Mandatory evacuations of New Orleans are to start on Friday and they are supposed to have 700 buses set up to ferry people out of the city, as they will NOT open the Superdome up as a safe haven. FEMA can't handle one storm...much less two. This'll be interesting, what with the regional agreements to help restore power, some of the help both areas would normally be able to expect won't be as forthcoming as they deal with their own problems. Assuming they both hit....

This does have the potential for a double whammy but only if the high pressure system fails us.
Predictions are like fleas on a rabbit, many and scattered.
If the high pressure system moves on down the continent toward the coast the Gustav mass could be forced westerly across the Gulf but allow the other mass to cross Florida mid state.
It's good to be prepared but don't get hysterical, this is not Katrina.
At this time we are still talking about an almost hurricane, at least until it gets back in the Gulf and the circulation picks up steam again. Even at that it has a long way to go to be even equal to our more moderate storms of the past.

Again, don't panic, just take a minute during your travels the next few days and stop here and there, pick up a thing or two, fill some water storage containers, grab some snacks, have the charcoal and lighter on hand, secure loose things, trim a limb or two if you think it may fall, carry a gas can the next day and fill it up. Even if you fill a gas can up only every day or every couple of days is a good thing to do at least so you can stick something in your car to get around.

The Gulf of Mexico will continue sending in what is known as non-essential workers through Saturday morning, at that time everyone else should be leaving.
If you are thinking of going North for a few days think about the lesser highways, people flock to the interstates.
Little Mom & Pop motels can be clean, owned by nice people and away from what could happen although I again urge you to be mindful but not hysterical.

Don't talk yourself into doom and gloom, just talk yourself into keeping your focus on being prepared even if it turns out to be nothing of consequence.

I have a full day's work to do over here, and then Sunday morning get myself and kitties over to Mom's. I've decided to take all my pictures off the wall and put them under the bed. If a tree falls on my house, even if the glass or frames get busted, the pictures should be reasonably safe. Question about phones: if I forward my house phone to the cell, will I still be able to get calls even if the lines go down? (In other words, at what point does the forwarding action occur?)

Depends on how the switching station handles a storm. After Katrina, I was in North Mississippi for a week. During that time, I could make calls, but not receive them. Being a Hattiesburg number, the call routes through the Hattiesburg exchange before going out to the cell network. If the switching station goes down, your phone will not foward to your cell.

Gustav more dangerous (http://www.nola.com/hurricane/index.ssf/2008/08/gustav_more_dangerous_will_thr.html)

During Hurricane Katrina, scientists say, the surge height was increased by the hurricane's high winds and intensity while still 12 hours off the Louisiana coast, a condition similar to what Gustav promises.

"Surge levels at the West Bank will be at or very close to the crown of the levee and there will be a wave field of two or three feet of waves on top, hitting every six seconds," Van Heerden said. "A very erosive situation."

Hwy 49 south report:

Northbound traffic is fairly heavy but brisk moving at the speed limit. The southbound lane is mostly emergency vehicle traffic; have seen many ambulance convoys from parts unknown. Camp Shelby medical Huey's are buzzing around this morning.

I remember the day before Katrina, the northbound lane became bumper to bumper gridlock and wonder if that will be the case this afternoon or tomorrow morning?

Well, I guess today will find us all busy with last minute prep. I know I still have a few things to do like moving some vehicles out from under trees, double checking the generators, and consolidating frozen and refrigerated foods into fewer appliances. I'll also go ahead and fill the gen tanks and go refill the gas cans. Even though we may not get terrific winds, its doesn't take much wind to knock by area of PRVEPA off the grid, 20 MPH can do it.

How is traffic looking on I-59?

Guru
August 31st, 2008, 09:32 AM
Well it was a certifiable mess yesterday for sure.
I am glad that folks down in Southern Louisiana are taking this seriously this time though.

People were dragging boats up and down the road, in both directions. Some getting the heck out of Dodge and some looked like they were going fishing.

Of course La. Hwy. 1 and 308 had some traffic but 308 wasn't too bad. When I dropped off the DesAllemands bridge on Hwy. 90 it was a complete road block. Stayed that way until I got onto Interstate 310. It got better for a mile or so and then slowing down again, sometimes bumper to bumper and stop and go.
Coming into NOLA on I-10, which turned out to be the better choice at the time instead of I-310 and I-55 (thank the Lord for up to the minute updates from NOLA WWL-870 am radio) the traffic was thin and the road wide open. Jumped onto Causeway Blvd. and then hit the big Pontchartrain bridge coming into Mandeville/Covington. Wide open and completely out of the clogged traffic from then on.
Took La. 21/Ms. 35 all the way to the ranch.
I did stop at the Walmart in Columbia and picked up a few things. I have a Walmart full of gas/diesel containers at home all filled up but I thought I would grab a few more - they were out at the time.

Today will be busy with around the place chores, looking for areas of opportunity involving storm preparations if I can find any that I haven't already done.

Can't shoot a hurricane.
I googled exploding a tactical nuke in the eye of a hurry cane yesterday. turns out there are many reasons it would be a bad idea besides the fact it wouldn't work but it was some pretty interesting reading about the real power within a hurry-cane.

Damn, if we could just harness this power and develop the perfect battery, one of these things would power the US for a year

Beer makes one, or at least me, much more calm--for the moment anyway. And as much as I snub piss water beer that Bud Light with Lime tweren't half bad...I guess that's why I sucked it down so fast......and it made seeing 'tornadoes' much easier to take. :D

I think I just got my drink on--it'll only took one--man I'm cheap.

They just reported on WDAM that Gustav may make landfall earlier than previously reported.

And they also admitted that their system was jacked up and we're not under a tornader watch.
Can somebody that's not retarded verify this?

Gustav

HURRICANE GUSTAV / WWT BULLETIN #30

At 2200CDT Sunday 31 August 2008/0300UTC Monday 01 September 2008.
POSITION: 27.3N 88.1W or about 220 miles southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana.
MOVEMENT: Northwest at 14 knots.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS: 100 knots with gusts to 120 knots.
MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE: 952mb.

ADVISORIES:
-A Hurricane Warning is in effect from just east of High Island eastward to the Alabama/Florida border, including the city of New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
-A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from east of the Alabama-Florida border to the Ochlockonee River.

DISCUSSION:
Hurricane Gustav remains on a northwesterly track late this evening. The steering ridge to the north should maintain Gustav on this track through 24 to 36 hours. Weakening steer currents will then cause Gustav to slow and turn more westerly by 48 hours over East Texas. Gustav has not strengthened this evening. Little or no additional intensification is predicted prior to landfall. Gustav should rapidly weaken after moving inland and is forecasted to become sheared to a remnant low around 96 hours.
