Don't forget Gilkey Electric for electrical/generator cords/plugs, etc. It seems a lot of folks use that technique of running a double male dryer cord from generator to dryer plug and disconnecting the main breaker (or dumping meter) so you can backfeed your houses's circuit panel through the 240V dryer circuit and open only the breakers than feed your refrigeration equip. When using a circuit for lighting, buy some very low watt bulbs and use them only when absolutely necessary so as not to overload your generator.

Lowe's is/was out of dryer cords

Disclaimer: don;t attempt this technique if you are unsure what you're doing or know exactly how your electrical distribution is setup from meter. You could not only start a fire but electrocute someone.

PS: be sure to pick up extra fuses for your generator and plenty of recommended motor oil. Most modern generators have a sensor that will not allow the generator to run when low on oil. Most all generators will use some oil and you should check the oil level each time you refill the fuel tank.

"technique of running a double male dryer cord from generator to dryer plug and disconnecting the main breaker (or dumping meter) so you can backfeed your houses's circuit panel through the 240V dryer circuit": Hawk's quote.

Is there a diagram anywhere of the way the dryer cord can do that? I'd love to be able to do it in an emergency. but am afraid I don't know enough about it to try it.

Opti, you're prolly safer just running extension cords, and after the storm having an electrician putting you a dedicated Generator Inlet on the side of your house.

You can run several outlets from your generator 110V feed and split off from there.
There are a lot of things you can run safely but remain minimal.
TV
Radio
110V Wall / Window Unit Air Conditioner
Clothes Washer
Floor Fans if you have them as back up to the air conditioner
If you do all your cooking outside on the grill life can be pretty good with this set-up if you have a clothes line.
During Katrina I mostly wore swim trunks and tank tops with Crocs.
When I did all my heavy work I wore the same thing except when I was running a chain saw.

*THIS JUST IN*

my brother rafa said that he has a few items left in mccomb @ fastenal

i know of extension cords, water, flashlights, batteries, tarps, plastic sheething and and like-

you will need to call him in the AM and "place an order" with him. he will load everything up and bring it saturday.

BTW- his gas cans are outrageous- they are the metal ones so i wouldn't think about them, and no generators. his stupid DM wouldn't let them order them, for fear that they would get stuck with them-

i would imagine this stuff will go quick, so i would start hounding him @ 7-7:15

601-408-1881 is his direct cell, just tell him that his brother told him to call ya

As of yesterday, Gilkey's was the only place in town that had the 240V (L14-30) generator twist lock male plugs. He also has 6 ft dryer cords. The cords are easy to make up as the L-14-30 male generator plug tells you what color wires to put where.

BC, thats a great idea to have an electrician install a dedicated generator receptacle but would that pass code?

If done correctly, with a switch on it, it would pass code.

Hawk,

Yes, if he's a licensed electrician, he will set it up using your main if you have that available, or a double throw disconnect which takes all the human element backfeeding possibilities out of the generator hook up.

On a 3 prong dryer plug, is the 3rd ("L" shaped) prong a ground or neutral?

BassCatter
August 29th, 2008, 03:09 PM
In most cases that's ground, if it's wired properly. The other two are the hot ones.

I don't believe that there is a neutral on a 220v

Hawkeye

Some say the L shaped pin is a ground and others say it is a neutral. The whole wide world of internet seems to argue this. I read old type 220 v receptacles had no ground but do have a neutral.

I have a 3 wire/3 prong dryer outlet. My generator has (240V) 4 prong receptacle (2 hots, 1 neutral, 1 ground). Trying to decide which terminal to connect the 3rd wire to? I know where to put the two hot wires but should the 3rd wire that is connected to the L-shaped prong on dryer plug be connected to the to the neutral or ground terminal on the generator's plug?

BassCatter

On the Neutral Hawk, the ground is the equipment ground for whatever equipment it is. Just drive a stake in the ground and connect a wire for ground if you like, but you don't really have to.

Here is the 3 wire dryer cord and plug and the L shaped prong is the neutral.

http://store.4appliancerepairparts.com/servlet/-strse-2202/electrical-power-electric-dryer/Detail

Here is the plug that needs to be installed on the other end of the above cord

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000VL04EA?smid=A1IZCISXTFZ9OX&tag=nextag-tools-tier4-20&linkCode=asn

Notice the longer prong - that is the freaking ground.
The one opposite it is the frigging neutral.
The other two are HOT.

So my guess would be forgettabout de ground terminal on the 4 prong plug and hook up the cord's middle (N) wire to the the 4 prong plug's neutral terminal.

SoMissTV, is the neutral not for recirculating the power, as in AC?

disclaimer: I ain't no dang leck-trechon :banghead:

If you have the time for the drive you may want to call Covington County Do-It-Best in Collins. They have a huuuge building with all you need to scratch any itch you may have.
Sorry, I don't have the number with me.
They may even have an extra truck load of generators in the back.

Dang dude. I was in Walmart the other day, which was outta 5 gal cans. But they were wanting $10 each. So Home Depot beat Walmart on that price.

I now have everything I need. I just need to fill up a couple more cans, like the half dozen my bro-in-law just dropped off.

The oil has been changed in the generator. I've got my cord to connect my camper to it. I've got a cord to connect my house to it. I've got batteries, lights, lanterns, water, water filter, canned food, frozen food, frozen water, dry goods, cloths, my family, my God.....don't need nuttin' else.

What about the doggie...Do you still have her? Has she adjusted to the girls?

I'm set too, just trying to sort out the mess. Planning now to stay at Mom's and not try the run to Olive Branch. Both SIL and I will have to come back to work, and I'm just leery of making that drive with my mom. Btw, Honey has my phone number now in case anybody needs anything (I can't think what it would be, but you never know.)

Yep, we got her. She's running around outside now. Were letting the kids play outside today cuz we're figuring we're at least gonna have rain for a couple of days. Gotta let'em get all the energy out.
