South Mississippi emergency management officials are warning of a hard freeze expected to hit the area on Tuesday night, with temperatures dropping into the 20's. Take today and tomorrow to prepare by protecting the elderly, pipes and plants.

A very cold air mass situated near the Canadian border is poised to move southward into the Gulf states on New Year's Day. Strong and cold high pressure will build into much of the nations midsection with some of the coldest air of the season expected to spread across areas east of The Rockies. Strong north winds will accompany the cold temperatures to provide uncomfortable wind chills Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

IF you have Citrus trees or any other tropical or marginally tender vegatation, you should take precautions or you will lose them. Cover them with blankets and you might consider stringing Christmas lights on them. They will provide enough heat to keep them going.

Bring your pets in if you can. We have one old dog who just will not come in, we will put some straw out for her and wish for the best. Check on your old neighbors as QM suggested and hole up as Hawk says he will!

I bet my mustard green patch bites the bullet, tonight. What say ye, FG?
I think the collards may survive. I would hate to have to get into putting a ton of greens in the freezer on NY Day. I'll at least go havest a big mess to go with the Blackeyes.

When I lived in Moselle I had two Satsuma Trees I brought up from Plaquemines Parish. Hard freeze was coming, I had fruit on the trees so I turned on the sprinkler to put a light coat of ice to insulate the trees to a 32 degree temp rather than the 20 it was getting down to. I opened a bottle of Knob Creek, and forgot to turn the sprinkler off.....When I woke the next morning, everything the sprinkler was coating was like 2" blocks of ice, broken on the ground........That episode claimed the Satsumas, a Peach, and Two Plum trees.

The greens will prolly bite the dust, and the ice coating can never be good. Good in theory, but the weight of the ice damages the branches.

We need to water everything in well this evening.

Hawk, your collards should be fine. Hope so, I am about ready for a mess.

Well, please stop by anytime and get you a BIG mess. There is aplenty and the collards didn't get buggy.

Hey Hawk, remember to make sure your tanks are empty on your RV. I just remembered to drain my fresh water holding tank. The others were empty, but since Katrina, I make an effort to keep my freshwater tank full, just in case of another catastrophe. But, I just drained 40 gallons, to make sure it won't freeze and bust my tank.

I always open the cabinet doors under my kitchen and bathroom sinks to let a little warm air around the pipes as well as letting faucets drip.

Quick dips in temps with the sunshine and warm up around say 40*F after a snap are what I call "Bug Whackers" and seldom cause much concern. It's those snaps that keep the temp down a couple to three days with below 40* on a warm up, usually no Sun, are the things that allow pipes at surface level to really get in danger of breaking and the fittings too.

I can't even say how cold it was this morning on the water front. The wind was blowing hard enough to change the color in your hair and cold enough to make you cringe when you think about going fishing.

Snow in parts of Florida:

TAMPA, Florida (AP) -- Florida's citrus growers reported only minor damage Thursday from a blast of cold air, even as snow flurries fell in at least one part of the Sunshine State.

When temperatures get down to 28 degrees for four hours, a tree can be ruined. While forecasts said it could get that cold overnight, temperatures hovered in the 30s in central and South Florida where most orange and grapefruit growers are based.

"Overall, this is preliminary, but it looks like we have dodged a bullet," said Rusty Wiygul, director of grower affairs for Florida Citrus Mutual. He said there will be pockets of minor damage.

Growers were doing two things -- harvesting as many mature fruits and vegetables as possible, and trying to protect plants by spraying them with water that freezes, insulating the temperature at 32.

Temperatures in many areas of northern Florida dropped into the 20s early Thursday, following the 30-degree temperatures some northern parts of the state saw Wednesday. Cross City was 20. Farther south, Orlando was 31 and it was 39 in Miami. Snow flurries were reported near the Daytona Beach coastline, the first in Florida since 2006.

We forgot about an outside faucet that had a hose hooked to it. I use it for watering flowers on the patio. The faucet was left on - my expensive hose froze and when my son picked it up, it broke in half like a straw. No freezing at the wall though - faucet is good.
