JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - By the 1990s, Republicans like Trent Lott and Chip Pickering had taken over politics in Mississippi and elsewhere in the South - once the domain of conservative Democrats who could hold office virtually as long as they wanted.
Lott, then the Senate's second-ranking Republican, acknowledged in a March interview with The Associated Press that as recently as the 1990s, Southerners like him and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia had held nearly all the top leadership positions.....
