MIAMI, Nov 19 (Reuters) - An American teen-ager survived for nearly four months without a heart, kept alive by a custom-built artificial blood-pumping device, until she was able to have a heart transplant, doctors in Miami said on Wednesday.

The doctors said they knew of another case in which an adult had been kept alive in Germany for nine months without a heart but said they believed this was the first time a child had survived in this manner for so long.

Wow. That would be scary...

I wonder the same thing. Back in the late 90's when my hubby had open heart surgery and had all the complications..he was put on some kind of machine to keep his blood pumping can't remember the exact name...some thing asbab etc...anyway, the Dr. Stephens and Dr. Enger told me that he could only stay on it 48 hours IF he lived that long, after that it would have to be removed...to their knowledge at that time only one person had lived once they had been taken off the machine. They told me after 48 hours, it would ruin the kidney, liver and other parts. Probably not the same machine but who knows? It would be a God send for alot of really sick people that is for sure.
